With the winter break over, the pre-season for season 3 has swung back into action, with many major and minor tournaments across all 3 continents scheduled for January. This is the second in a regular installment of a look around the landscape of the top teams in our world rankings.
It's been a busy time at LoLPortal, with lots of new features that we've incrementally released over the past two weeks. In case you missed them, here are the shiny new things to play with.
In the last couple days, I started the process of adding picks and bans data to a select few tournaments and creating a visualization of the most popular champions for each tournament. So far, I've added data for IEM Cologne and Korea's Champions Winter. You can hover over each bar in the graphs to get more information on each champion's win rate and pick/ban ratio.

In my last blog post, I covered how I ended up calculating the comparative skill ratings of professional teams using an Elo-style rating system. In this post, I'll look at how it fared when it came to predicting the results of IPL 5.
A little while before IPL 5, I started seeing a bunch of tournament previews/speculation/prognostications pop up. Many were interesting and insightful, but few of them offered concrete data on the latest performances of participating teams. Given how fundamental some version of the Elo rating system has become to most competitive video games, I thought it would be interesting to calculate Elo ratings of professional League of Legends teams and maintain that list going forward.
